Tongan Death Grip formed in 2012 when Ultimo gathered local Chicago musicians united by a shared love of pro-wrestling. The current lineup, consisting of Ultimo, Lex, El Lepardo, and Aldollah The Butcher, channels an aggressive fusion of punk, thrash, crossover, death metal, and hardcore. Wrestling remains central to the band's songwriting, though now as a metaphor for contemporary social issues. "JBL," for instance, addresses ICE and immigrant mistreatment—the acronym standing for Just Borders and Lies rather than any WWE reference. In the past two years, Tongan Death Grip has self-released three EPs, a live album, and a 7" split with Milwaukee's Bad Decisions. Their work has received airplay on Chicago radio station WHCM 88.3 and coverage from PUNK BLACK and ZigZag SexMag.
A 10" EP arrives this winter while the band completes its full-length debut. Live, they deliver high-energy performances, remaining professional and dependable while bringing relentless intensity to every show. A summer and fall 2027 tour is planned to support the full-length release.
